The offensive woes of the Washington Nationals continued into Wednesday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies. That is until the Phillies gifted the Nationals the go-ahead run in the seventh inning thanks to an outfield blunder.
With the game tied and at 1-1 and a runner on first, Alex Avila drove the ball deep to right center. As the ball came down Phillies outfielders Bryce Harper and Odubel Herrera lost sight of the ball. Both collided as the ball dropped, allowing Castro to score from first and Avila to reach third for the go-ahead RBI triple.
The National took to Twitter trolling the Phillies by calling the outfield blunder, “The Philly Special”
The reference is of course to the spectacular trick play by the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles in their Super Bowl LII win over the New England Patriots in 2018.
The Nationals have shined a new light on the term “Philly Special” with the forgettable Phillies play.
