Despite addressing multiple needs in this year’s NFL Draft, the Washington Football Team continues to add viable starters to its roster. Earlier this week, Washington signed former Chicago Bears left tackle Charles Leno Jr. Now, they are signing former Miami Dolphins safety Bobby McCain to a one-year deal, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
The Dolphins released McCain on May 6. He became expendable and a cap casualty after six seasons when Miami drafted Jevon Holland in the second round of this year’s draft.
McCain spent his first four seasons primarily as a nickel cornerback. He earned a four-year, $27 million contract in 2018. Then he switched to safety in 2019 and eventually became a team captain.
Last season, he played in all 16 games, recording 46 tackles, five passes defensed and one interception during Miami’s 10-6 season.
While Landon Collins is expected to return to strong safety after suffering a torn Achilles and the emergence of last year’s seventh-round pick Kamren Curl in his place, Washington wanted to add depth and talent to the back end of its secondary. McCain now gives Washington a great deal of flexibility at safety.
McCain also continues head coach Ron Rivera and his staff’s theme of versatile players with his ability to play cornerback and safety. He joins Curl in that flexibility that could present numerous options for defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio going into training camp.
Washington had the second-ranked defense in the NFL last year. However, there was still a need for improvement in the secondary. Washington lost cornerback Ronald Darby but replaced him with seemingly an upgrade in William Jackson III. Washington also added Benjamin St-Justes in the third round of the draft. Now, McCain tops off their bolstering with another potential starter.
