Charlotte Hornets play-by-play announcer Eric Collins has grown his popularity with his over-the-top but hilarious calls during Hornets game. On Sunday he provided another gem when Washington Wizards forward Davis Bertans committed a flagrant-one foul on Hornets star rookie LaMelo Ball.
Late in the third quarter, Ball sprinted down the court in transition off a rebound. As he went up for the layup, Bertans fouled him above the head making contact around Ball’s neck.
Collins called it perfectly, saying “LaMelo, oh he got mugged! Accosted, a horse collar.”
Given Ball was unscathed, Collins’ call was more laughable and entertaining than anything else.
The Hornets and Wizards played each other in Sunday’s regular season finale with the winner taking the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference’s play-in tournament.
Ball has emerged as favorite for Rookie of the Year despite missing 21 games through March and April with a fractured wrist. The Hornets are on te right track to progress with a good young nucleus that includes Terry Rozier, Miles Bridges and PJ Washington.
Yet on a mass scale, the guy calling their games has become arguably a main attraction for a franchise owned by the Michael Jordan.
