Monday proved to be an adventerous return to Wrigley Field for Kyle Schwarber. In his first game back since signing with the Washington Nationals last winter, Schwarber received a standing ovation from Chicago Cubs fans; a Twix candy bar left in the outfield for him; and a two-run homer.
Schwarber was greeted with a standing ovation as he walked up to the plate in the top of the first inning to “Thuggish Ruggish Bone” by Bone Thugs-n-Harmony.
Schwarber spent six seasons with the Cubs. However, Chicago non-tendered him, sending him to free agency before he ultimately signed with the Nationals.
Despite his exit, Schwarber has relationships and bonds with his former teammates. Willson Contreras greeted him during his standing ovation. But, Kris Bryant went another route, leaving a Twix candy bar in the outfield as a gift to Schwarber. between innings.
Schwarber ate the Twix while in the outfield. The candy may have boosted the Nationals slugger. In his next at-bat in the fourth inning with Josh Bell on first, Schwarber delivered a two-run home run off Adbert Alzolay.
The blast was Schwarber’s 60th home run at Wrigley Field, but his first in an opposing uniform. It was also his sixth homer of the season and fourth of the two-run variety.
Schwarber admitted Bryant’s gift calmed his nerves as emotions were running high in his return to Wrigley.
“I might have to eat a Twix tomorrow,” Schwarber said per, Maria Torres of the Athletic. “Maybe the Twix calmed my nerves down or something like that
