Juan Soto has been easing back into a groove at the plate since returning from the injured list with a shoulder injury. Wednesday night the Washington Nationals slugger broke through when he dropped to one knee to hit a moon shot home run off the scoreboard at Wrigley Field.
Soto displayed sheer power to drop down and dig out Jake Arrieta’s slider and sending it into the bleachers. It was Soto’s first homer since May 7 and just his fourth of the season. The blast extended Washington’s lead to 4-1 in the fifth in route to a 4-3 win over the Chicago Cubs.
The Nationals offense has struggled out the gate. While they’re a good hitting team, Washington has struggled to score runs. They’re currently scored the third-fewest runs in MLB. That’s in large due to injuries and the Nationals not being able to get a cohersive lineup.
But Juan Soto hitting an emphatic home run shines a glimmer of the Nationals progressing more as he gets comfortable at the plate.
