Maryland guard Darryl Morsell to make transfer decision Monday

Maryland guard Darryl Morsell will announce his decision on where he will play college basketball next season on Monday, according to ESPN’s Jeff Borzello.

Morsell is most notably considering Big East programs Providence, Marquette and DePaul as well as Louisville and Arkansas. He has not ruled out a return to the Maryland Terrapins.

In April, Morsell declared for the NBA Draft but kept his college eligibility while entering the NCAA’s transfer portal. Morsell will withdraw from the draft and pursue a fifth season in college under the NCAA’s COVID-19 waiver.

Last season, Morsell earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. He averaged 9.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists as the Terrapins earned an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament.

A return to Maryland would boost the Terrapins prospects for the 2021-22 season. The Terrapins got two huge transfers in guard Fatts Russell, formerly of Rhode Island, and former Georgetown center Qudus Wahab.

Still, Maryland’s ability to be a top-10 team this season may be contingent on the decisions of three key players, including Morsell.

Aaron Wiggins and Eric Ayala both declared for the NBA Draft in addition to Morsell. Wiggins received an invite to the NBA Draft Combine. It’s widely believed Ayala would return to Maryland. Meanwhile, Wiggins’ decision is still in the air.

Maryland will be crossing their fingers, hoping Morsell starts a domino effect of coming back.
