The Washington Wizards, along with the Orlando Magic, have requested permission to interview Dallas Mavericks assistant Jamahl Mosley, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.
The Wizards remain one of as many as five teams still searching for a head coach in the NBA. That’s although Los Angeles Clippers assistant Chauncey Billups is reportedly in contract talks to become the next head coach of the Portland Trailblazers.
Meanwhile, positions with the Boston Celtics, Indiana Pacers and Dallas Mavericks have been filled. The Mavericks opted with hiring Jason Kidd despite the fact Mosley had a close relationship with Dallas star Luka Doncic. Interestingly enough, Kidd was recommended by the guy he is replacing Rick Carlisle, who has since taken the Pacers job.
It appears Mosley will be the odd man out in Dallas. He is not expected to be part of Kidd’s coaching staff. It’s also reported some within the Mavericks are not happy Mosley wasn’t strongly considered for head coach.
Mosley has been with the Mavericks since 2014. Before then, he was an assistant with the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2010-2014 and the Denver Nuggets 2007-2010.
The Wizards’ search for a head coach has been relatively quiet. However, Celtics assistant Scott Morrison revealed he interviewed with Washington. A pair of former Wizards assistants Sam Cassell and Wes Unseld Jr. have been rumored as top candidates for Washington.
