Report: Sam Cassell ‘very unlikely’ to become Wizards next head coach

The chances of Sam Cassell reuniting with Bradley Beal and the Washington Wizards seems to be fading away.

Monday, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Washington narrowed its search for head coach down to multiple assistants. Dallas Mavericks assistant Jamahl Mosley, Denver Nuggets assistant Wes Unseld Jr., and Milwaukee Bucks assistants Darvin Ham and Charles Lee were all named to be involved with the second round of interviews.

One name omitted from the report is Sam Cassell. Maybe that’s because he is out of the running?

According to Quinton Mayo, Cassell is “very unlikely” to become the Wizards next head coach.

Last week a report suggested Cassell and Unseld were leading candidates to get the job. Cassell interviewed with the team shortly afterwards. However, signs point to him no longer being in the running.

Some fans had hoped Cassell would return to Washington. He got his NBA coaching start with the Wizards, spending five seasons there as an assistant. Cassell was largely credited with the development of John Wall and Beal.

Cassell left to join Doc Rivers with the Los Angeles Clippers in 2014. He followed Rivers once again this season to the Philadelphia 76ers.

It’s unclear why he may no longer be in consideration with the Wizards. It’s also unknown if he has interviewed with any of the other two openings — Orlando and New Orleans.

Don’t fret, there could be a reunion of some sort in Washington. Unseld is a former Wizards assistant and Ham played one season with the team in 1997-98.
