Spencer Dinwiddie is officially a member of the Washington Wizards, signing a three-year deal reportedly worth $62 million. Inside the deal Dinwiddie is up for a number of bonuses. But it’s one in particular that’s got everyone’s attention and laughs.
Dinwiddie will earn a whopping $1 if the Washington Wizards win the NBA championship during his contract, per Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. That’s right, $1.00.
When asked about the $1 championship bonus, Dinwiddie made the light gesture funnier. During his introduction press conference, Dinwiddie joked he will request to be paid with 100 pennies, per Fred Katz of The Athletic.
This season, the odds are not in the Wizards’ favor to win a championship. But, he has a three-year deal. Who knows how much more improved Washington could be the following two seasons and how the landscape will alter.
Adding Dinwiddie to go alongside Bradley Beal is a start. The Wizards also added Kyle Kuzma, Montrezl Harrell, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope in the Russell Westbrook trade with the Los Angeles Lakers. Washington also added Aaron Holiday in the trade. They then drafted Corey Kispert and landed the 31st overall pick Isaiah Todd.
Arguably the Wizards are already improved from recent seasons. Spencer Dinwiddie adding a one dollar bonus for a championship is probably a joke to himself. But he and the Wizards faithful are hoping the joke pays off.
