The Houston Rockets got a rare win, when guard Kevin Porter Jr. drained a buzzer-beating three to sink the Washington Wizards 114-111.
As Porter and his Houston teammates celebrated, Wizards announcer Glenn Consor made an unfortunate mix-up about Kevin Porter’s father.
Consor likely confused Porter Jr. to be the son of former Washington Bullets point guard Kevin Porter.
Having identical names could easily cause the confusing.
The older Kevin Porter played six of his 10 seasons in the NBA with the Washington/Baltimore Bullets throughout the 70’s and early 80’s. He still owns the franchise record for the most assists in a single-game with 24.
Unfortunately, he is not Kevin Porter Jr.’s father.
Kevin Porter Jr. of the Rockets and his father were born Bryan Kevin Porter. What makes Consor’s comments more dreadful is the fact that Kevin Porter Sr., Kevin’s father, spent over four years in prison for manslaughter as he was convicted for shooting a 14-year old girl.
In August 1993, just 15 months after Kevin Porter Jr.’s oldest sister, Keayanna, was born, Kevin Porter Sr. was charged with first-degree murder of a 14-year-old girl. The only witness to the incident initially told police that Porter Sr. was in his car with the girl, pointed a gun at her, told her he was going to shoot her, and then pulled the trigger.
However, the witness, who was the girl’s friend, later recanted her statement that the shooting was intentional. Porter Sr. had said that the young woman had asked to see his semiautomatic weapon, which was loaded and cocked, and it accidentally discharged while he was handing it to her. Porter Sr.’s attorney said the witness had been pressured to say the things she did by the family of the young woman that was killed. Kevin Porter Sr. pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and was sentenced to four and a half years in prison.
Porter Sr. was ultimately shot and killed in a Seattle bar when the younger Porter was four years old.
It was presumably a mistake by Consor. A mistake for a sports analyst that was totally avoidable. Wizards play-by-play Justin Kutcher didn’t correct Consor either of fear not wanting to embarrass his colleague or out of confusion?
Hopefully, Consor becomes aware of his mistake and apologizes to Porter Jr.
