When the Georgetown Hoyas men’s basketball team takes the floor Thursday against Butler, head coach Patrick Ewing won’t be on the bench. Georgetown announced Wednesday, Ewing will miss the game at Capital One Arena due to DC Department of Health guidelines.
Assistant coach Louis Orr will serve as the team’s acting coach “starting with the Butler game.”
The wording of the announcement may suggest Ewing could miss multiple games. However, that at the present time is unclear.
Thursday will be Georgetown’s second game since Dec. 18. The team had four games postponed as it dealt with COVID-19 issues.
In May 2020, Ewing was hospitalized after testing positive for COVID-19.
Orr has been in coaching for 28 years. Much of his experience has occurred in the Big East Conference in which Georgetown plays. He started out as an assistant at Xavier, who wasn’t in the conference at the time but later joined.
Orr also had stops as an assistant at Providence and Syracuse before getting his first head coach job at Sienna in 2000. He came back to the Big East to be the head coach at Seton Hall from 2001-2006. He also was head coach at Bowling Green from 2007-2014.
After being named the Hoyas head coach in 2017, Ewing hired Orr as an assistant.
Georgetown is 6-6 overall and 0-1 in the Big East. They’re coming off an embarrassing 28-point loss to Marquette last week. Ewing ripped the team after the loss saying legendary head coach John Thompson II “is rolling over in his grave” after the team’s performance.
