Joe Gibbs recalls hilariously great story behind Washington historic Super Bowl XXII quarter

One of the greatest performances in Super Bowl history was all sparked by a heated exchange between a head coach and an assistant coach? According to former Washington head coach Joe Gibbs, that is exactly what took place during Super Bowl XXII.

Gibbs sat down with NBC Sports’ Peter King discussing what led to the team’s historic five-touchdown second quarter.

The first quarter was not kind to Washington, as they trailed the Denver Broncos 10-0 early. Gibbs recalled the team was frustrated. He called a couple of the plays, when he overheard one of the coaches rip Gibbs saying “That may be one of the dumbest calls I’ve ever seen.”

Gibbs quickly went to the phone to get in touch with the coach who presumably was in the coaches’ box. Gibbs claims he told the coach to meet him in the locker room at halftime so he could kick his butt.

Before the coach could plead his case, a furious Gibbs hung the phone up on him.

Still furious, Gibbs went back to coaching the game. However, Washington’s offense woke up, scoring five touchdowns in the second quarter. Washington quarterback Doug Williams threw for 228 yards and four touchdowns in the second quarter alone en route to being named Super Bowl XIII MVP.

Washington exploded to a 35-10 lead. They won 42-10 claiming the franchise’s second of three Super Bowl championships.

By the way Gibbs says when he got to the locker room at halftime, he was too busy hugging and giving his coaches hi-fives to remember he wrote a check to kick someone’s butt.
