Ron Rivera hints at Commanders plans for QB

There is no secret the Washington Commanders need an upgrade at quarterback. The question lies into how will the team upgrade the most important position in football?

Commanders head coach Ron Rivera told The Athletic (subscription required) he believes Washington has a “lot to offer” viable options at quarterback.

When diving into the specifics, Rivera was more vague than detailed. However, he gave foresight into what the Commanders were looking to do.Ā

When speaking on the team’s QB plans for 2022, it sure sounded like the realistic option is the Commanders drafting a quarterback at some point to develop, while bringing in a veteran quarterback alongside Taylor Heinicke, who Rivera said itā€™s ā€œa fair assumptionā€ that Heinickeā€™s roster spot is safe next season.

ā€œWeā€™re more than likely going to have a veteran on the roster, more than likely (will) have another veteran, (and) more than likely have an opportunity to have a rookie on the roster as well,ā€ the coach said.

Rivera’s wasn’t clear if the team would use the 11th overall pick in April’s NFL Draft to get their rookie QB. He also wasn’t clear on how they would obtain a veteran quarterback.

But, one most likely option is landing a second-tier quarterback as a stopgap such as Jimmy Garoppolo of the San Francisco 49ers or free agents, Mitchell Trubisky, Teddy Bridgewater or Marcus Mariota. Then the team would select a rookie early in the draft, potentially the first-round.

That doesn’t mean the Commanders won’t inquire about bigger named options such as Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson or Deshaun Watson. But, Rivera’s conversation with The Athletic sketches the idea that the team may feel those options are unlikely.
