The Washington Commanders conducted an extensive search for their next quarterback before ultimately settling on a trade for Carson Wentz. Washington’s search included over 40 options, starting with big names Russell Wilson, Aaron Rodgers and Deshaun Watson.
After those options were crossed off, the Commanders considered trying to talk former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck out of retirement, according to ESPN’s John Keim.
At one point they even wondered: Would Andrew Luck, the retired former Colt, want to play again? That went nowhere. But whether it was realistic or a Lloyd Christmas “So you’re telling me there’s a chance” scenario, they wanted to make sure every “i” was dotted.
Luck’s last full season was in 2018. That season he won NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year after returning from shoulder surgery. He threw for 4,593 yards with 39 touchdowns to 15 interceptions. However, he shocked the NFL world when he announced his retirement on August 24, 2019.
Luck cited the recurring injuries and the grind of constant rehab. He retired at the age of 29.
Last year, Colts owner Jim Irsay told fans Luck “definitely is retired” presumably after a conversation about a return. The Colts turned its attention to Carson Wentz, acquiring him in a trade from the Philadelphia Eagles.
Coincidentally, the Commanders one year later, turned their attention to the Colts and acquired Wentz in a trade after a check into the now 32-year old Luck.
Some may laugh at Washington’s approach to talk a quarterback out of a three-year retirement. But, the size of their quarterback search should be appealing to their fans. With more details coming out, it shows head coach Ron Rivera and the front office really dotted every “i” as much as they could.
