After a winless Big East season, the Georgetown Hoyas are looking to rebound. Head coach Patrick Ewing has already adjusted his coaching staff, and now he’s looking to make another big addition.
According to college basketball insider Adam Zagoria, Georgetown is targeting former Louisville interim coach and assistant Mike Pegues to join Ewing’s staff.
Pegues, 44, has great ties to the Washington, D.C. area. He starred at DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Maryland. After starring four years at Delaware under fellow DeMatha alum Mike Brey, Pegues started his stellar coaching career at the high school level in the DMV.
He coached at Friendship Collegiate Academy and on the area’s AAU circuit. He also was an assistant at O’Connell before entering the college ranks.
Pegues was an assistant at his Alma mater Delaware. Then joined the staff of Chris Mack at Xavier and later followed him to Louisville. He was named interim coach this season after Mack mutually parted ways with Louisville.
Pegues reportedly was a finalist for the George Washington head coach opening that went to Chris Caputo. It was a question where he’d land if he went the assistant route.
Ewing and Georgetown have put a concentration on adding experience along with ties to the local area. If Pegues is hired, he’ll join former LSU interim coach Kevin Nickelberry, who was hired to Ewing’s staff last month. Nickelberry is a D.C. native and former head coach at Howard.
