Earlier this week it was announced that Maryland women’s basketball leading scorer Angel Reese has entered the transfer portal. Immediately speculation brewed about her younger brother Julian Reese who just came off his freshman season for the Terrapins men’s basketball team.
However, his mother Angel S. Reese has put an end to the speculation. In an interview with Jeff Ermann of Inside MD Sports, Reese reassured Julian will return to Maryland for his sophomore year.
“That’s not even on his mind,” Reese’s mother said.
Maryland settled in on a new head coach, hiring Kevin Willard away from Seton Hall last month. Usually when there is a coaching change there is a cause of concern for transfers, especially in the era of NIL’s and the transfer portal.
Willard takes over after Mark Turgeon stepped away from the head coach position at Maryland eight games into this past season. Danny Manning finished the season as the interim coach. But it was always evident Maryland would bring in a permanent choice.
The 6-foot-9 Reese committed to Maryland as the 52nd-ranked player in the nation. He averaged 5.7 points and 4.4 rebounds in 32 games in his first season in College Park. He shot 45.6% from the field, including 30.4% from three.
His return puts him in line to have a breakout campaign for the 2022-23 season. Reese could be the centerpiece of the start of the Kevin Willard era at Maryland.
