DeMatha’s four-star small forward Tyrell Ward made his decision Saturday. Despite saying Georgetown was his “dream” school, Ward is not going to play for Patrick Ewing next season.
Instead, the Maryland native chose Matt McMahon and the LSU Tigers.
Mike Young and Virginia Tech were also among Ward’s final three. In the case of the Hokies and Hoyas, Ward had ties assistants at both schools.
Virginia Tech’s associate head coach, Mike Jones, was Ward’s former head coach at DeMatha Catholic High School. Jones stepped away from the Stags to join the Hokies staff.
Georgetown has reportedly hired former Xavier assistant Jordan Brooks.
Ward initially committed to Xavier but reopened his recruiting after Travis Steele was fired in March.
Many recruiting pundits believed Ward would stay local and commit to the Washington, DC school in Georgetown. Missing out on Ward appears to be another blemish on Ewing’s resume. The Hoyas went 0-20 in Big East conference play, including a first-round loss in the Big East Tournament to Seton Hall.
Tyrell Ward stands at 6-foot-6. He is rated as a consensus top-40 recruit by major recruiting websites. He is considered the 10th-best small forward in the nation by 247 Sports.
Ward joins an LSU program that was depleted following the firing of head coach Will Wade just ahead of last month’s NCAA Tournament. The Tigers had a mass exodus afterwards with nearly all its top players entering the transfer portal, including Brandon Murray who committed to Georgetown.
However, McMahon and his staff have done a marvelous job rebuilding the roster. LSU added four-star power forward Jalen Reed and four touted transfers in addition to Ward.
