The Washington Mystics were knocked from the ranks of the unbeaten Friday night. Washington suffered its first loss of the young WNBA season 94-86 at the hands of the Dallas Wings.
Through the struggles of the night, Mystics forward Myisha Hines-Allen was ejected after being called for a questionable flagrant-2 foul in the fourth quarter.
The play was reviewed for quite some time. Officials assessed the flagrant-2, sending Hines-Allen to the showers with 7:12 remaining in the fourth quarter. At the time the Mystics trailed 75-60.
The call drew the ire of Mystics guard Natasha Cloud, who missed her second straight game due to health and safety protocols.
Hines-Allen drove down the lane after grabbing a rebound on the other end. As she got into the paint she was defended by Wings forward Isabelle Harrison. Hines-Allen dipped her shoulder and as she rose up to shoot the layup, her head knocked into Harrison’s jaw.
By the letter of the rule, a flagrant-2 is assessed when the foul is unnecessary and excessive against an opponent. Even with the slowed down review, Cloud appears to have an argument. But what’s done is done.
Hines-Allen finished with five points, seven rebounds and four assists in 21 minutes.
