Carson Wentz got off to a great start with the Indianapolis Colts. However, by season’s end, Colts owner Jim Irsay made it clear that Wentz had worn out his welcome there.
After trading him to the Washington Commanders, Irsay stressed Wentz’s lone season in Indianapolis a huge “mistake” following the the Colts acquiring Matt Ryan as a replacement.
Wentz remained quiet despite the constant jabs from Irsay and Colts general manager Chris Ballard. That is until Wednesday.
Appearing on the Colin Cowherd Podcast, Wentz said he was caught off guard by Irsay’s comments. Still, the new Commanders QB seemingly took the high road.
“I mean, it is what it is, you know. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion,” Wentz told Cowherd. “I thought last year was a really fun year. I thought we did some incredible things, came up short at the end. Obviously, I struggled down the stretch there and timing was poor. But yeah, I didn’t expect that. I didn’t expect things to unfold the way they did and I thought things were in a pretty good place there.”
Additionally, there has been a lot made of Wentz not having the greatest relationships with teammates. Some saying his ways rubbed the locker room wrong in general. There were similar criticism from his time with the Philadelphia Eagles.
“I had an awesome relationship with every single person in that building, can’t say enough good things about the people over there. (Irsay’s comment) kind of came out of left field. He’s entitled to his own opinion, and he’s entitled to do what he wants with his football team,” Wentz continued.
Nevertheless, Wentz is on his third team in three years. Both of his stints with the Eagles and Colts ended not in his favor. Thus, he was traded in back-to-back offseasons.
Whether true or not, the picture Irsay has painted is the perception of Wentz. Like Troy Aikman and many others have said, the Commanders may be his final shot at proving he is a franchise quarterback.
How his tenure in Washington goes will go a long way to stamping or debunking the perception of Carson Wentz.
