Commanders asking fans to help decide lyrics of new fight song

The NFL’s Washington franchise rebranded in February as the Washington Commanders after two seasons with the temporary name “Washington Football Team.”

The team is trying to continue and link its traditions from its previous moniker the Redskins. That includes bringing back the marching band and fight song in modification.

This week, the Commanders launched a page on the team website, asking fans to vote on two options for the new fight song.

The options help decide the chorus of the song.

Option 1 is “Hail to the Commanders! Hail Victory! Fight for Our Commanders! Fight for Old D.C.!”

Option 2 is “Hail to the Commanders! Hail Victory! Leaders on a Mission! Fight for Old D.C.!”

Commanders head coach Ron Rivera told the media on Tuesday he liked the sound of “mission” per Ben Standig of the Athletic

Judging from reaction over Twitter, the two options are not all that appealing to fans. No, not because of issues with the name change, but the lyrics chosen.

The Commanders marketing has stumbled in recent months under team president Jason Wright. At times, the decision-makers have gone back to the drawing board following negative fan feedback. That occurred after the team dropped the ball on the championship years on their new crest. Washington also readjusted its fan vote for the team’s “Greatest 90 List” after initially omitting former left tackle Trent Williams and former quarterback Robert Griffin III.

But for now, fans will get to decide between the two lyric choices for the new fight song. Will it be “Leaders on a Mission!” or “Fight for Our Commanders!”?
