Washington Commanders cornerback Danny Johnson is probably feeling like barbeque chicken after being cooked by Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Demarcus Robinson on a beautiful 67-yard touchdown for Robinson.
Robinson smoked Johnson with an insane double move, just as his quarterback, rookie Anthony Brown pumped the football. The move also turned Commanders rookie safety Percy Butler around, but Johnson was the nearest defender and had him in man-to-man coverage.
Johnson was toast before he could realize what happened. Meanwhile, Robinson waltzed into the end zone to give the Ravens a 10-6 lead following the extra point.
Johnson is among a group of Commanders cornerbacks fighting for a role. He was a target for opposing offenses in preseason. Still, it’s widely considered he is among the top-six cornerbacks on the roster, and could find a role behind William Jackson III, Kendall Fuller and Benjamin St-Juste.
On the other hand, Robinson just signed with the Ravens on Tuesday after being released by the Las Vegas Raiders a week prior. The Ravens are desperate for a wideout standing out for former MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson, especially after the trade of Hollywood Brown.
Robinson is hoping to make an NFL roster after six seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. He made a strong statement Saturday against the Commanders. The double move fooled Johnson and Butler.
Ravens went on to win 17-15 for their 23rd consecutive preseason win.
Johnson surely would like that play back. Meanwhile, Robinson used the moment to boost him. He finished the game with four catches and 135 yards to go along with the touchdown. And in the process, may have secured him a spot on the Ravens’ 53-man roster.
