Washington Commanders safety Kam Curl did not participate in Wednesday’s practice. Instead, the third-year pro stood on the sideline with his right arm in an apparent brace and sling.
It’s unclear what was the extent of Curl’s injury. After the practice head coach Ron Rivera was mum about Curl’s status.
“We don’t have to give an injury report until next Wednesday, so we’ll stay away from all that,” Rivera said, per ESPN’s John Keim.
Rivera is correct. NFL teams are not required to give an injury update until next week ahead of the regular season openers. If it’s up to the team officials, we’ll have to wait to learn what’s ailing Curl.
However, Curl’s teammate and fellow safety Bobby McCain told JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington that Curl will be “out a few days.”
While Washington did make a slew of moves in the day, none appeared to be an indication towards Curl not being available for Week 1. Plus, he hasn’t been placed on injured reserve.
In the meantime, Jeremy Reaves, Darrick Forrest and/or rookie Percy Butler should get an increase in practice reps.
A seventh-round draft pick in 2020, Curl emerged as Washington’s most reliable safety. He’s appeared in 32 games with 25 starts thus far. He caught three interceptions as a rookie in 2020. Last season, he recorded 99 tackles with 1.0 sack, five passes defensed and a fumble recovery.
