A week after being sacked nine times, Washington Commanders quarterback Carson Wentz had yet another dreadful performance Sunday. Wentz completed 25-of-42 passes for a pedestrian 170 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in the Commanders’ 25-10 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
Washington now has a 1-3 record following their third straight loss. The Commanders’ losing streak coincides with the struggles of Wentz and the offense.
There may be multiple issues within the Washington offense, but Wentz accepted blame for his role in their struggles.
“I’ve got to be more accurate,” Wentz proclaimed, per ESPN’s John Keim. “I’ve got to make better plays and make good decisions.”
Wentz’s accuracy and decision-making have been the narrative of his career. The Commanders have a good deal of talent at the skill positions. Yet, the football isn’t getting into the playmakers’ hands at a consistent rate, especially at wide receiver and tight end.
It’s a group that features Terry McLaurin, Curtis Samuel, Logan Thomas, and rookie Jahan Dotson. Against the Cowboys, none of the quartet had over 43 receiving yards.
Wentz was pressured a lot by the Cowboys’ vaunted defensive line. But, even when pressured there were opportunities for Wentz to make plays and he didn’t. His inaccuracy got highlighted on two passes to McLaurin in the fourth quarter that was broken up by Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs.
Last week against the Philadelphia Eagles, the team that drafted him, Wentz was 25-of-43 passing and sacked nine times. In four games, Wentz has at least 14 incomplete passes in each game. He’s thrown an interception in three games, including two in two games.
Carson Wentz was supposed to be Washington’s answer at quarterback. It’s the first viable signal caller since Kirk Cousins’ departure before the 2018 season. Yet, Wentz has looked much like past quarterbacks.
There is a litany of issues for the Commanders’ offense. But it will ultimately come down to its quarterback. Wentz is being paid a handsome sum of nearly $28.3 million. The team will go as he takes them. Hopefully, it will be somewhere positive if Washington is to overcome a 1-3 start.
