Report: Cowboys safety Jayron Kearse ruled out vs. Commanders

Dallas Cowboys safety Jayron Kearse hoped to return to the field Sunday against the Washington Commanders. However, the team’s leading tackle a year ago will miss his third consecutive game, the Cowboys ruled Kearse out, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

Kearse suffered an MCL sprain in Week 1’s loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was limited through the week and listed as questionable for Sunday.

Initially, a seventh-round draft pick of the Minnesota Vikings, Kearse played primarily on special teams until he arrived in Dallas last season.

Kearse thrived as a hybrid linebacker/safety role much like Landon Collins did with Washington last year. Kearse had 101 tackles, two interceptions, and one sack.

Despite being without Kearse for two games, the Cowboys defense has been stellar, ranking first in sacks and eighth in points and yards allowed. Safety Donovan Wilson has been one of the back-end players that stepped up in Kearse’s absence.

It will be interesting to see if the Commanders offense led by quarterback Carson Wentz can take advantage of Kearse not being in the game. The Cincinnati Bengals and New York Giants could not do in the previous two games.
