Commanders to use ‘mixture’ at MLB with Cole Holcomb out with foot injury

The Washington Commanders will be without its Mike linebacker Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts. Cole Holcomb has been ruled out with a foot injury.

The Commanders will use a “mixture” of players at Mike linebacker in Holcomb’s absence, head coach Ron Rivera told reporters, per Matthew Paras of the Washington Times.

David Mayo, Jon Bostic, and starting Will linebacker Jamin Davis will split snaps in the middle of the Commanders’ defense.

Holcomb leads Washington with 69 tackles through seven games, playing 446 of 452 defensive snaps. Davis has had his fair share of ups and downs. However, he has played well in the last couple of games.

Mayo has played 21 defensive snaps filling in on sub-packages. The Commanders signed back Bostic just ahead of the season. However, Bostic has not played a defensive snap this season.

The Commanders will face the Colts amid a quarterback change from Matt Ryan to Sam Ehlinger. Indianapolis is expected to lean on their run game that enters this week ranked 30th out of 32 teams with 81.0 rushing yards per game.

Those numbers may not tell the whole story as All-Pro running back Jonathan Taylor has battled with a sprained ankle. Taylor has no injury designation going into the game. Ehlinger also can run that should add to their rushing attack.

The Commanders must figure out a way to limit the Colts’ run game without its top run stuffer.
