A huge missed call by the officials in Monday night’s game cost the Philadelphia Eagles dearly against the Washington Commanders.
Trailing 23-21 in the fourth quarter, Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert caught a pass from quarterback Jalen Hurts. Commanders linebacker Jamin Davis brought down Goedert by his face mask. Goedert fumbled the football after being hit by John Ridgeway.
Davis scooped up the football, running it into the end zone for what was ruled a touchdown on the field. The play was under review because of the turnover. The review determined Davis was down by contact at the Eagles’ 34-yard line.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, the missed face mask by the officials is not reviewable.
The fans inside Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field voiced their frustration with the missed call.
The Commanders went three and out on the ensuing possession. But kicker Joey Slye drilled a 55-yard field to extend Washington’s lead to 26-21 with 7:33 remaining.
The Eagles chased the three additional points, needing a touchdown thanks to the officials’ missed call. They never got those points back. Wide receiver Quez Watkins fumbled on the Eagles’ next possession. Ultimately, the Eagles suffered their first loss of the season by a 32-21 score.
