Ex-Duke player Brian Davis rumored to place offer for Commanders

Another mystery suitor of the Washignton Commanders may have been revealed. During Monday’s airing, Jason “Lurch” Bishop of The Sports Junkies revealed former Duke and NBA player Brian Davis is preparing a $7 billion offer to buy the Commanders.

Bishop adds that Davis is said to have up to $9 billion available through his investors’ group. There isn’t much info on Davis and his net worth. However, Davis has been in real estate for quite some time. He also was part of DC United Holdings which acquired the MLS club DC United for a then-record $33 million in 2007.

That group was led by Will Chang along with Davis and his former Duke teammate and Washington Wizard player Christian Laettner. Chang bought out Davis and Laettner’s interests in October 2009.

Davis played at Bladensburg High School before attending Duke. The 6-foot-7 forward was an integral part of Duke’s back-to-back national titles in 1991 and 19912. He was a second-round NBA draft pick. He briefly played for the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The lack of information on Davis’ net worth and bidding group will draw questions about the validity of Bishop’s report. It’s unclear if Davis is the lead investor in the process.

In 2006, a minority interest group consisting of Davis and Laettner failed to match an offer to buy the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies for $252 million. Davis’ group could not come up with the money ahead of an agreed deadline.

What’s known is the NFL requires the lead investor to purchase at least 30% interest in a team. Also, no group can exceed 25 members, including the lead investor. The group cannot burrow more than $1.1 billion to facilitate the team purchase, according to the Washington Post.

Reports emerged earlier this month that the sale of the Commanders was imminent. Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils owner Josh Harris is considered the favorite to buy the Commanders from Dan and Tanya Snyder. Recently Harris added billionaire Mithell Rales and NBA legend Magic Johnson to his group.

Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta reportedly placed an offer of around $5.5 billion. Last week, Canadian billionaire Steve Apostolopoulos was revealed as a potential suitor as he toured FedEx Field and the Commanders headquarters.
