The NFL is reviewing the $6.05 billion bid from Josh Harris and his partners to buy the Washington Commanders. Details have trickled out about the proposal. Yet, one suggestion about legendary Washington Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs may not be accurate.
Mike Ozanian of Forbes told 106.7 the Fan’s BMitch and Finlay Joe Gibbs might be a limited partner in Harris’ group.
However, ESPN’s John Keim provided clarity about Gibbs’ role. According to Keim, Gibbs is not part of the Harris group as an investor. Instead, he is close to Harris and has provided insight and counsel.
That crushes the buzz that sparked Wednesday at the notion Gibbs would be a part owner. The potential ownership group includes DC billionaire Mitchell Rales and NBA legend Magic Johnson. Gibbs would have been icing on the cake.
Unfortunately, that may not be the case. Yet, if Gibbs has a close relationship with Harris, that could open the door to the former coach getting involved with the franchise he helped build in some capacity.
Joe Gibbs won three Super Bowls in four appearances in his first stint with the franchise from 1981-1992. His run was remarkable as he won each Super Bowl title with a different starting quarterback and lead running back.
Gibbs became the owner of Joe Gibbs Racing in 1992 and has since won five NASCAR Cup Series titles and four Xfinity Series titles. He returned to coach Washington under owner Dan Snyder from 2004-2007, reaching the playoffs twice.
