For the second straight year, Primo Spears is transferring. Sunday, the former Georgetown guard announced his commitment to Florida State, saying on his IG page, “I’m rocking with Coach Ham” in Seminoles head coach Leonard Hamilton.
Florida State made an official announcement on Monday.
Spears started his collegiate career at Duquesne. As a freshman, he averaged 12.7 points per game on 36.7% shooting from the field. He then transferred to Georgetown to play under head coach Patrick Ewing.
At Georgetown, Primo Spears led the team with 16.0 points and 5.3 assists this past season. He improved his shooting to 40.8%
However, his efforts weren’t enough to avoid a disastrous season for the Hoyas. Georgetown finished last in the Big East Conference with a 2-18 mark within the conference and a 7-25 record overall.
Ewing got fired before the school replaced him with former Providence head coach Ed Cooley. Despite Cooley being familiar with him from his high school recruiting, Spears entered the transfer portal last month.
Meanwhile, Cooley landed former four-star recruit, Illinois transfer Jayden Epps. Then, Rowan Brumbaugh transferred to Georgetown from Texas. The two expect to be the Hoyas’ starting backcourt next season. Epps is more like a combo guard, Brumbaugh possibly running the point.
Spears narrowed his decision to Florida State and Kansas. He visited the Jayhawks first before finishing up his recruiting with a visit to Tallahassee. Florida State recently hired Kevin Nickelberry played a role in Spears’ decision. Nickelberry was Georgetown’s associate head coach last season.
