Indianapolis 500 nearly turns tragic with flying tire from crash

Josef Newgarden of Team Penske won the 107th running of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, but not before the classic race had a scary moment in which fans escaped near tragedy.

With 20 laps remaining in the race, drivers Felix Rosenqvist and Kyle Kirkwood collided. Kirkwood’s rear tear disengaged from the car, bouncing off the track over the outer fencing, and appeared headed into the grandstand at turn 2.

Officials drew a red flag to halt the race immediately. The scene was anxious for onlookers, expecting the worse and hoping for better.

Fortunately, according to multiple reports, the tire cleared the stands, avoiding fans. Instead, the tire landed in a nearby parking lot, hitting a Chevy vehicle.

The car had damage, but thankfully no one was injured. The classic event nearly turned tragic.
