The Washington Commanders have added depth at the wide receiver position just before the start of training camp. Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Commanders are signing Byron Pringle, a familiar name for new offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy.
Pringle played three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs with Bieniemy as the offensive coordinator.
Last season, Pringle had a disappointing season with the Chicago Bears. A calf injury limited him to 11 games. He never quite had any chemistry with quarterback Justin Fields. As a result, Pringle had ten receptions for 135 yards and two touchdowns.
His numbers in 2022 were a far cry from the 42 catches, 568 yards, and five touchdowns he had in 2021 with the Chiefs under Bieniemy. His familiarity with the offense would allow him to mentor the Commanders’ receivers. He will also get the opportunity to showcase his abilities in training camp and the preseason.
Washington’s top three wide receiver spots are set between Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson, and Curtis Samuel. Dyami Brown expects to get every chance to be the fourth wideout option.
Byron Pringle is the second former Chiefs pass catcher to sign with the Commanders this offseason. Marcus Kemp inked a one-year deal in March. He’s likely to contribute on special teams. Pringle could push Brown or get the chance to slot into the WR room somewhere.
