Carson Wentz is “back in the lab” working on his game. He currently does not have an NFL home. Training camp is entering the third week, and the league is about to embrace the first week of the preseason schedule.
The former No. 2 overall pick remains a free agent. He’s had a tumultuous three-year stretch ending with him getting traded by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2021 and the Indianapolis Colts in 2022 before getting released in February by the Washington Commanders.
Wentz showed the NFL world he is available, and working to get back, while poking some fun at himself.
He posted several images of him working out while wearing an Eagles helmet, his Commanders practice jersey, and a pair of Colts shorts.
The caption read, “Back in the lab… just looks a little different so far this year 🙃 #alternateuniforms #trainingcamp2023.”
The reaction was mixed.
Grant Paulsen of 106.7 the Fan tweeted, “Carson Wentz doing a wacky bit where he’s working out in the gear of all the teams he’s played for…”
“Carson Wentz is wearing a 3-team parlay 😭,” BR Betting tweeted.
“This almost made me feel bad for Carson Wentz for a brief second, so I guess it kind of worked,” Barstool Big Cat said.
“Well done,” Scott Abraham of 7NewsDC said.
“Some people post their resumes online looking for jobs. Carson Wentz wears his,” another post said.
BetMGM tweeted, “This picture of Carson Wentz is absolutely hysterical.”
And lastly…
An ESPN report in March said Wentz was open to any role for the 2023 season. That included being a backup. He talked to some teams during February’s NFL Draft Combine.
Wentz was a frontrunner for the 2017 NFL MVP before he tore his ACL during a late-season game against the Los Angeles Rams while playing with the Eagles. With Wentz sidelined, Philadelphia captured its first Super Bowl title behind quarterback Nick Foles.
Wentz regained his starting role the following season. But an injury sidelined him for the 2018 playoffs. Foles took over again at QB. From 2019-2020 Wentz struggled before the Eagles ultimately traded him to the Colts during the offseason in 2021, turning over the keys at QB to Jalen Hurts.
Wentz lasted one season in Indianapolis before the Colts shipped him off to Washington. A broken finger sidelined him after six starts in Washington. Backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke came in and outplayed him before the Commanders turned back to Wentz with their playoff hopes on the line.
Wentz threw three interceptions in a Week 17 loss to the Cleveland Browns, eliminating the Commanders from postseason contention. He threw for 1,755 yards, 11 touchdowns, and nine interceptions in eight games last season. He posted a 2-5 record as a starter.
