The Washington Commanders are mere days from its preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns. However, the biggest headline of the team’s practice Tuesday was about the coaching style of offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy.
Commanders head coach Ron Rivera opened Pandora’s box earlier in the day, admitting that some players have felt “concerned” about Bieniemy’s intense coaching style.
After practice, Eric Bieniemy defended his approach.
“Yes, I am intense, and I would be afraid too at the start if I didn’t know it,” Bieniemy said, per Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post. “But I’m always upfront, and I’m always honest. … I expect us to be the team that we’re supposed to be. It’s not going to be easy, but everybody’s not going to like the process.”
Bieniemy’s approach has been a topic of discussion since he was the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs. While the Chiefs’ core has been publicly supportive of Bieniemy in the past, former KC running back LeSean McCoy has been critical of the coach.
“I’m always going to be loud, and I’m always going to be vocal,” Bieniemy added. “I’m always going to demand from our leaders. … I want our guys to clearly understand that we’re not taking anything for granted.”
After five seasons as the Chiefs offensive coordinator, winning two Super Bowl titles in three appearances, Bieniemy headed to Washington with a different challenge.
The Commanders have not won a playoff game since the 2005 season. Rivera is in his fourth year as head coach, sitting on the hot seat after three disappointing years and a recent ownership change. Bieniemy has been passed for head coach openings, inexplicably for some pundits. He’s charged with setting a new fire into a talented offense led by Sam Howell, a second-year quarterback with one career start.
The Commanders may be Bieniemy’s biggest shot at proving he can be an NFL head coach. His approach won’t be enjoyable all the time. But it’s more about the players of today. Tough coaching sometimes is frowned upon. The reception depends on the acceptance of the player.
“I’m going to be their biggest and harshest critic, but also understand, I’m going to be their number one fan because I support them at all times,” Bieniemy continued.
Bieniemy’s approach is a culture shock for the Commanders. The franchise has not had much go right for it in the least three decades. To some, Bieniemy is a breath of fresh air. Yet, others may not be accepted for that type of shakeup.
The 2023-24 season is pivotal for the Commanders. We’ll learn more about Rivera, Bieniemy, and the players as the season unfolds.
