Next up for the Washington Commanders is the New York Giants, Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. All eyes are on the availability of Giants quarterback Daniel Jones, who missed Week 6’s loss to the Buffalo Bills with a neck injury.
Jones was limited in practice Wednesday, the Giants’ first of the week. Head Coach Brian Daboll said Jones got cleared to throw but not yet for contact.
Tyrod Taylor, who started against the Bills, would be in line to start against the Commanders if Jones is unavailable.
Daniel Jones got injured in Week 5 against the Miami Dolphins. He was sacked six times in the game, a week after he got sacked ten times against the Seattle Seahawks.
Jones has been sacked 28 times on the season. Sam Howell of the Commanders is the only quarterback in the league sacked more times than Jones.
Daniel Jones has had the Commanders number
Jones is in the first year of a four-year, $160 million contract he signed this offseason. Through five games, he has thrown two touchdowns against six interceptions.
Historically, Jones has been a thorn in the Commanders’ side. In seven starts, Jones has a 5-1-1 record. The five wins are his most against any NFL franchise. He has completed 69.7 percent of his passes for 1,510 yards in those games.
Jones also has 324 rushing yards and averages 6.2 yards per rush attempt against Washington.
Meanwhile, Taylor is a serviceable backup. He has 54 NFL starts in his career. He completed 35-of-51 passes for 200 yards with no turnovers. Taylor also put the Giants in a position to beat the Bills, as his goal-line pass to Darren Waller fell incomplete on a questionable no-call on the game’s final play.
Regardless of who lines up under center for the Giants, the Commanders will get a heavy dose of run plays and short passes. Taylor has shown a better sense of protecting the football than Jones. But the preparation for the Commanders’ defense could be similar for Taylor and Jones.
