The Washington Commanders are one of two NFL teams without a head coach. The Commanders have conducted a large-scale search to replace Ron Rivera. However, two candidates have dropped out in less than 24 hours.
Just a few hours after Ben Johnson pulled out of the Commanders’ search to remain the Detroit Lions offensive coordinator, Bobby Slowik has done the same to remain the offensive coordinator with the Houston Texans.
Slowik agreed to a contract raise to stay in Houston with emerging quarterback CJ Stroud, per Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated.
Slowik started his pro coaching career in Washington. He is coming off his first year as the Texans offensive coordinator. He guided Stroud, an Offensive Rookie of the Year candidate, and the Texans to an AFC North division title and playoff win.
Bobby Slowik is returning to Houston along with QB coach Jerrod Johnson for the 2024 season.
Depending on the report, the Commanders won’t lose much sleep losing out on Slowik and Johnson. Washington has plenty of strong candidates. The team is making its rounds of in-person interviews that include Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald, Ravens defensive line coach Anthony Weaver, and Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter was steadfast that Johnson was never a lock for the Commanders. Team insider Ben Standig suggested that Slowik wasn’t near the top Washington’s list.
However, the situation is a big blow for Washington fans who wished for an offensive-minded head coach. Unless there is a surprise dark horse such as Eric Bieniemy, the Commanders appear destined to look at the defensive side for a team general.
Previously, recently-hired general manager Adam Peters stated he didn’t have a preference for offense or defense but was looking for the “best leader” for his potential head coach.
