Former Commanders GM Martin Mayhew staying with team in new role

The Washington Commanders are still without a head coach as their search continues. However, their front office has begun to shape up with at least one member of the previous regime staying.

According to ESPN’s John Keim, former general manager Martin Mayhew will remain with the team in a new but uncertain role. Mayhew will be present at the Senior Bowl, representing the Commanders with other team officials.

In January, the Commanders replaced Martin Mayhew at GM with Adam Peters. Mayhew and Peters worked together previously with the San Francisco 49ers.

The Commanders compiled a 19-31 record over the last three seasons with Mayhew as GM.

In his tenure, the Commanders drafted Jamin Davis, Jahan Dotson, and Emannuel Forbes in the first round. All three picks have yet to emerge as cornerstone players, and their selections have gotten criticized with comparisons to players Washington passed on.

Washington was his second stint as GM. He was with the Lions from 2008-2015.

Peters is the first major hire under new owner Josh Harris. Immediately, Peters jumped in the search for a head coach to replace the fired Ron Rivera. Mayhew won’t be the only mainstay, as the team expects to retain Marty Hurney, who was executive vice president of football/player personnel, in an undisclosed role.
