Austin Voth received a spot start Sunday in place of the injured Stephen Strasburg. He breezed through two perfect innings before his outing abruptly came to an end in the third inning.
While batting in the third, Voth took a 90-mph fastball to the face from Phillies’ starter Vince Velasquez. Voth went down in a heap.
It’s unclear where the ball hit Voth but He was visibly bleeding from the nose. Velasquez appeared shaken his pitch beaned Voth.
Voth had struck out two getting through two clean and perfect innings. Sunday turned into a bullpen day for the Nationals. Voth had a short leash in the start, but who’s to say what may have been with him breezing through the first two innings.
Unfortunately, he did not get the opportunity to see it through. Velasquez struggled early in the game to find command. It was very apparent in the third inning when he hit Victor Robles on the arm with a pitch to lead off the frame. One batter later he got Voth in the face.
Now, the Nationals will have to wait to find out the severity of Voth’s injury.
