Redskins interim head coach Bill Callahan wants to run the football. He wants rush attempts over yards per carry. That’s what he said Wednesday after practice and after Thursday’s practice he doubled down on his statement a day prior.
He went as far as saying Adrian Peterson has not been able to get in enough of a rhythm this season running the football.
Peterson answered that he is “hyped” about the Redskins’ newfound commitment to the run game.
Peterson is seemingly not a fan of former head coach Jay Gruden, who was fired Monday after a 0-5 start. Gruden reportedly wanted to cut Peterson during final cuts for the initial 53-man roster but was overridden by the team brass.
Gruden reacted by making Peterson inactive for Week 1. However, after Derrius Guice injured his knee, Peterson was thrust back in as the starter, but there was not the same commitment to the run game as the season before.
Now with Gruden out and Callahan in, Peterson is set to benefit arguably the most. And it was clear he is excited about it, even throwing a shot at Gruden when saying the Redskins had their best week of practice since he signed with the team last season.
Peterson added some of the new things presented by Callahan reminds him of his time with the Vikings and Saints.
Critics of Gruden have pointed to the relaxed practices which in argument may have led to the many second half collapses the Redskins endured under him. Callahan came in with an intent to change that, as their is more tempo and focus from accounts.
While fellow running back Chris Thompson was emotional about seeing Gruden go, Adrian Peterson doesn’t hold the same sentiments.
