Bill Callahan will not be part of new Washington Redskins head coach Ron Rivera’s staff. The decision comes as no surprise as he was closely aligned with recently fired Bruce Allen.
Callahan had been with the Redskins for five season, starting in 2015 as the offensive line coach. Assistant head coach was added to his title in 2017. Then, he was named the interim head coach in October following the firing of Jay Gruden.
Callahan set out to change the work ethic of the Redskins, especially in practice. Gruden’s practices were often criticized for their lack of intensity which was echoed by former Redskins safety DJ Swearinger towards the end of the 2018 season.
Some fans had hoped Callahan would revert back to his role as offensive line coach under Rivera, but that will not be the case.
Callahan is well-respected for his work with offensive lines and his preaching of physical football. The Redskins adopted the attitude of Callahan. It showed with their strong play in the second half of the season before injuries wiped out the team.
While Callahan is out, some of the Redskins previous offensive assistants will interview with Rivera, including offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell.
