In the world of college sports, “hate-watching” is a time-honored tradition. But following Villanova’s 80–73 win over Georgetown this past Saturday, former Maryland head coach Kevin Willard made it clear he finds the practice a little… pathetic.
Despite coaching on a neutral-to-hostile court at Capital One Arena in D.C., the loudest jeers weren’t necessarily coming from Hoya fans. Instead, a vocal contingent of Maryland Terrapins fans made the short trek to D.C. specifically to heckle their former leader. Willard, who left College Park for Villanova last April in a move many Maryland faithful still view as a “midnight flight” betrayal, wasn’t about to let the “red” in the stands go unnoticed.
“They Wasted a Saturday”
When asked post-game by Testudo Times reporter Nolan Rogalski about the Maryland fans who showed up to boo him, Willard didn’t hold back. His response was very candid, slightly salty coaching charisma:
“They wasted a Saturday. I don’t know what the f*** they were doing. They’ve got nothing better to do on a Saturday than come look at my bald a**? I don’t know what they’re doing.”
The quote went viral immediately, fully capturing the friction between a coach who has moved on and a fan base that clearly hasn’t.
A Tale of Two Trajectories
The heckling likely stems from deep-seated frustration with Maryland basketball’s current state. Since Willard’s departure:
- Villanova is surging under his leadership, sitting at 18-5 and looking like a lock for the NCAA Tournament.
- Maryland, currently under Buzz Williams, is struggling through a nightmare 9-14 season, on pace for one of its worst records in decades.
For Maryland fans, watching Willard find immediate success in Philadelphia while the Terps flounder is a bitter pill to swallow. However, if they were hoping to get under his skin, they only gave him more material for the post-game podium.
Willard has never been one to shy away from a blunt assessment, and his “bald a**” comment is a reminder that while fans might hold a grudge, he’s too busy winning games to care about their Saturday plans.
