Samaje Perine Inactive for Redskins vs. Cardinals

The Washington Redskins will go into Sunday’s season opener with three active running backs, as last season’s leading rusher Samaje Perine among the Redskins’ inactive against the Arizona Cardinals.

Perine slid in the depth chart after injuring his ankle in the second preseason game. The Redskins ultimately signed Adrian Peterson for depth, but the former NFL MVP, outshined the group of running backs and won the Week 1 starting job.

Perine returned for the fourth preseason game after sitting out a week, but lost a fumble bringing back concerns of his ball security stemming from his rookie season in 2017. Although he made the 53-man roster, its been clear that he sits behind Peterson, Rob Kelley, and Chris Thompson on the depth chart.

Joining Perine is wide receiver Maurice Harris, who was ruled out on Friday as he continues to deal with symptoms of a concussion he suffered in the second preseason game.

Rookies offensive tackle Geron Christian and cornerback Adonis Alexander also will be inactive. Ty Nskehe will presumably be the swing tackle for Sunday’s game, and the Redskins are deep at cornerback with young talent. Greg Stroman and Danny Johnson, fellow rookie corners, are expected to contribute in special teams an advantage over Alexander.

A pair of players recently added are also inactive. Linebacker Josh Keyes who was signed after the team placed running back Byron Marshall on injured reserve and defensive lineman Caleb Brantley, who was signed after final cuts in favor of Anthony Lanier.
