Ty Nsekhe is returning to the Washington Redskins as the team is set to begin off-season programs on Monday. The restricted free agent signed his second-round tender that will pay him $2.9 million for the 2018 season.

The money is not guaranteed, but with his importance to the team both sides are expected to work on a potential long-term deal.

The Redskins placed a second-round tender on Nsekhe just ahead of the start of free agency. He was free to negotiate with other teams in hopes of being signed to an offer sheet. The Redskins would have had the opportunity to match. However, there was no interest on the swing tackle with a new potential team having to surrender a second-round pick for a 32-year old tackle with just 11 starts in his career.

The Redskins value Nsekhe more that’s why they placed such a high return for him. He has been one of the better backup tackles in the NFL since signing with Washington in 2015 after bouncing around various team’s practice squads, the AFL and CFL. Last season a core muscle injury sidelined him for much of the season but he returned and started five of the team’s final six games in place of the injured Trent Williams.

Nsekhe signing comes at a great time as both Williams (knee) and right tackle Morgan Moses (ankle) will miss OTAs as both nurse their respective injuries.
