One week after being held to 115 yards of total offense, the Maryland Terrapins have exploded for 28 first half points against Illinois sparked by two huge plays from running back Javon Leake.
Leake, who scored the Terrapins first touchdown on a 97-yard kickoff return, added a 64-yard touchdown run to his day.

The Illinois defense is just too slow compared to the speed of Maryland at the skill positions. Leake got good blocking ahead of him that allowed him to run off tackle and from there it was a footrace outrunning the defense all the way to pay dirt.
Leake now has his first two-touchdown game of his collegiate career. He entered Saturday’s game with two touchdowns in the first six games. He has now doubled that thus far in the first half. His latest score extended Maryland’s lead to 21-6 in the second quarter.
Maryland was not done with scoring as quarterback Kasim Hill threw his second touchdown of the game, finding Jeshaun Jones in the end zone with 2:02 remaining to extend the Terrapins’ lead to 28-9 just before halftime.
It’s just one half, but Maryland has 111 passing yards, 171 rushing yards, and 130 return yards.
Now Illinois is no Iowa, but it’s a great start for Maryland to overpower a team they seem superior over.
