Jim Tomsula is officially returning as the Washington Redskins defensive line coach. The team made the announcement Tuesday along with news of Kevin O’Connell being promoted as offensive coordinator.

Tomsula joined the Redskins in 2017, and Washington has seen vast improvement along the defensive front thanks in large to the addition of Jonathan Allen, Matt Ioannidis, and Daron Payne.

It was reported Tomsula wanted out of Washington earlier this month, as the team surveyed possible coaching changes on defense. However, when it was settled Greg Manusky would return as the defensive coordinator, Tomsula, who’s contract had expired at the end of the 2018 season, and the Redskins had began discussions for a new contract.

It was Allen who expressed his desire for Tomsula to return, calling him his “favorite” coach he ever had.

The retaining of Tomsula and the promotion of O’Connell adds to the changes along Jay Gruden’s coaching staff. Washington as added Nate Kaczor as the special teams coach as he replaced Ben Kotwica, who left for the same position with the Atlanta Falcons. Ray Horton replaces Torrian Gray as defensive backs coach. And, Brian Angelichio replaces Wes Phillips as the tight ends coach.
