The Washington Redskins are already set to sign Landon Collins, making him the highest-paid safety in the NFL. They may not be done at the position. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Redskins would like to re-sign Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and they are working to do so.
The Redskins acquired Clinton-Dix from the Green Bay Packers at the NFL trade deadline last season for a fourth-round pick. At the time, Clinton-Dix was being paired with DJ Swearinger.
Clinton-Dix struggled in his two months in Washington, as the Redskins collapsed down the stretch after a 6-3 start to finish 7-9. Swearinger was waived after a Week 16 loss to the Tennessee Titans in which he criticized defensive coordinator Greg Manusky.
Clinton-Dix appeared to be a rental for the Redskins, and was set to hit free agency. However, it appears Washington wants to pair Clinton-Dix with Collins in hopes of putting together a potentially special safety duo, the one they thought they had with Clinton-Dix and Swearinger in 2018.
If the two sides can make it happen, Clinton-Dix will get the opportunity to get more familiar in Manusky’s system and could be a great compliment to Collins’ style of being primarily in the box. The Redskins prefer interchangeable safeties, and they’ll get that to a degree with the pairing more so than they did with Swearinger and Clinton-Dix.
The Redskins are releasing both linebacker Zach Brown and defensive lineman Stacy McGee to clear cap space in their retool of the defense.
