One thing the Washington Redskins have been good at the past two seasons is injuries. In 2017 they had 26 players being placed on injured reserve. In 2018, they had 28 players placed on IR.

The rash of injuries have long been a topic of discussion among fans, with their ire pointed at the training staff. It appears the fans aren’t the only ones taking notice, as Michael Phillips of the Richmond Times-Dispatch revealed in an appearance with Chad Dukes on 106.7 the Fan Monday.

“One thing I will tell you, though,” Phillips said per Chris Lingebach of 106.7 the Fan. “Bruce Allen and the Redskins were so concerned about this, they hired outside consultants to come into the building this offseason and examine everything about the way the Redskins handle injuries. Top, down. Top to bottom.

“Gave them full latitude of the building – ask questions, do whatever you want. So I can tell you that while it is still happening, that’s bad, there’s at least a general awareness that this is bad and this is not normal.”

Last season, the Redskins were forced to start four different quarterbacks in large due to injuries. Both Alex Smith and Colt McCoy required multiple additional surgeries to treat their leg injuries.

While Adrian Peterson turned out to be a great signing at running back, the need for him was overshadowed. Derrius Guice, Chris Thompson, Robert Kelly, Samaje Perine, and Byron Marshall each either were injured in the preseason or early in the season.

Four of five Week 1 starters on the offensive line were injured, including two to season-ending injuries. Even their replacements suffered injures. Wide receiver, tight end, not one single position on the offense didn’t lose at least one key player to injury.

It’s unclear if any findings by the consultants can help with preventing injuries. However, at least the Redskins’ brass has acknowledged having 54 players placed on IR in the last two seasons is not normal.

Phillips is set to touch on details and dive deeper in the process of the consulting. All eyes will be focused on the upcoming piece as well as how the Redskins handle any future injuries.
