The Washington Redskins announced their second of two first-round picks EDGE Montez Sweat signed his rookie contract.

Details of the deal were not disclosed, but Sweat is slotted to make roughly $11.6 million over four years with a fifth-year option, according to Over The Cap.

Washington traded back into the first round of last month’s NFL Draft to select Sweat 26th overall.

Following the draft, head coach Jay Gruden acknowledged the Redskins considered taking Sweat with the 15th pick overall, but the team ultimately elected to select quarterback Dwayne Haskins. When Sweat remained on the board, as the first round continued, they jumped at the opportunity to move back in to take the former Mississippi State pass rusher.

Sweat’s draft stock dropped him out of the top-10 after he was diagnosed with a heart condition at the Scouting Combine which reportedly led to some teams taking him off their board.

However, just ahead of the draft a separate report stated Sweat may have been misdiagnosed. Sweat went on to say that a Houston Texans doctor told him he had a “normal heart.”

Sweat has impressed throughout OTAs.

He is expected to compete with Ryan Anderson for the starting EDGE position opposite of Ryan Kerrigan.

Sweat’s signing leaves third-round pick wide receiver Terry McLaurin as the Redskins’ lone unsigned draft pick.
