Mystics Win First-Ever WNBA Title after Rallying in Game 5 vs. Sun

Washington, DC has another professional sports title, as the Mystics claimed their first-ever WNBA championship. The Mystics rallied to beat the Connecticut Sun 89-78 in the decisive Game 5 of the WNBA Finals.

Emma Meesseman led the Mystics in Game 5 with 22 points. WNBA MVP Elena Delle Donne battled through a back injury to add 21 points and nine rebounds. And Natasha Cloud, who guaranteed a Game 5 win after losing Game 4, finished with 18 points.

The Mystics trailed in the third quarter by as many as nine points. But, they would not be denied their moment, rallied back and outscored the Sun 27-14 in the fourth quarter behind a 13-2 run that busted open the game.

Washington’s mantra all season was “Run It Back” in reference to losing the WNBA Finals last season to the Seattle Storm. The Mystics channel their motto to race to the league’s best record at 26-8.

They embraced the moment and ran it back to claiming their first-ever WNBA championship and completing their journey.
