Has Nike joined the fray of not using the term “Redskins?”

Nike recently introduced its “Salute to Service” gear for all 32 NFL teams. In doing so the brand includes the team names of 31 of the teams but not the Washington Redskins. Instead, their gear as pictured above states “Washington Football.”

The Washingtonian recently tackled the omission, and went as far as contacting both Nike and the Redskins on the matter.

“This would be a question for Nike,” Washington spokesperson Sean DeBarbieri told The Washingtonian. “They issue all of the NFL team gear.”

Nike has not responded to The Washingtonian request for comment.

The term “Redskins” has been controversial through the years with more momentum towards challenging the team’s name. Native American advocacy groups have protested the name calling the term a racial slur. But Redskins owner Dan Snyder has vowed not to change the team’s name.

Several media outlets have refused to use the term “Redskins” including Pro Football Talk. It’s unclear why Nike opted for “Washington Football” or if the company is making or supporting any statements against it.
