Freshman centers Makhi and Makhel Mitchell are leaving the Maryland Terrapins program and entering the transfer protocol. The school officially announced their departure Friday night.
Both head coach Mark Turgeon and the Mitchell’s released statements.
Mahki was the more touted of the two coming out of Wilson High School in Washington, DC.
Mahki appeared in 12 games, averaging 9.3 minutes, 3.0 points and 3.3 rebounds. He struggled mightily offensively, shooting 35.3% from the field and 54.5% from the free-throw line.
Makhel was used more sparingly. He appeared in 10 games, averaging 6.8 minutes per game. He averaged 1.0 points and 2.3 rebounds.
The Mitchell’s committed to Maryland in large due to their relationship with then-assistant coach Kevin Broadus. However, Broadus has since moved on to become the head coach at Morgan State.
The Mitchell’s departure leaves Maryland thin in the frontcourt. Center Jalen Smith now is the only player over 6-foot-8 that has played in a game this season. Maryland also has 7-foot-2 Choi Marial. However, Marial was recently cleared following surgeries on both of his legs for stress fractures.
Maryland (10-2) has lost their last two games, altering the narrative of their season. Senior guard Anthony Cowan was critical of the team’s recent practices seemingly directed at Turgeon. The Mitchell’s departure only adds to the drama.
